We realize most garden snobs consider iceberg lettuce to be beneath their dignity. Well, all we can say to that attitude is this: some things are popular for a reason! When iceberg lettuce was introduced in the 1890s, it was a revelation: sweet and mild like other lettuces, but also durable and crunchy, like a cabbage. Iceberg allowed lettuce to be shipped by the trainload and to earn a place in every family's icebox (there weren't refrigerators yet). Iceberg can even stand being unrefrigerated for a while without losing its signature fleshy crunch. And despite the common conception, iceberg lettuce does contain valuable nutrients, including Vitamin A, potassium, and fiber.
'Red Iceberg' is a sweet, crisp, delicious, fully-heading lettuce tinged with red. Our seed comes from the lettuce wizards at Wild Garden Seeds.
