Many varieties of sweet peppers were planted together and allowed to cross pollinate by Joseph Lofthouse at his farm in Paradise, Utah. They were selected for two generations for great growth in a cool, short-season garden, and for germination under less than ideal conditions. The population moved strongly in the direction of banana peppers, like it did last time Joseph started a pepper grex.
