This gorgeous, purple-green leaf mustard is perfect for salads, especially when the leaves are young and fresh. Its deeply-veined, downward-curling leaves are pungent like wasabi, but also sweet. Our seeds were grown by Jennifer Williams of Vashon Island, Washington, who says this variety is very well-suited to the Pacific Northwest, but we expect it will thrive elsewhere too. Donated to Seed Savers Exchange in 2002 by member Kazumitsu Tsutsui of Kagawa, Japan, it has long been quite popular on the Exchange since it was first offered in 1997. Plants reach roughly a foot and a half tall and two feet wide at maturity — give or take. Hyakka performs best when sown in summer for fall harvest.
