'Platte Witte Mei' (pronounced PLAHT-uh VIHT-uh MAY in Dutch) means "flat white May", indicating its shape, color and earliness. Started a few weeks before last frost, by mid-May the flat white round turnips are ready to eat — and delicious! This is an excellent early heirloom turnip from the Netherlands with flattened round white roots and green leaves. Baby turnips are particularly delicious. This is a good storage variety too.
EFN co-founder Nate Kleinman imported a sample of seeds from the Netherlands (with a "small lots of seed" import permit from the USDA) in 2021, and the seeds we're selling were produced for us by our dear friends Clint Freund and Kass McKinnon of Cultivating the Commons in Amery, Wisconsin.
GROWING TIPS: Grow as any other turnip. Can be started any time from late winter to early fall.
