The original 'Sugar Snap' pea — now a staple in so many kitchens and children's lunch boxes — was only introduced in 1979. Dr. Calvin Lamborn is largely credited with its creation and introduction, though he couldn't have done it alone. Dr. Lamborn, of Twin Falls, Idaho, crossed a snow pea with a thick-podded shelling pea identified by his colleague Dr. M.C. Parker in 1952. The resulting pea became practically an overnight success, and it stands as one of the most impressive feats of plant breeding of the past century. In 1998, Dr. Lamborn released 'Super Sugar Snap' as a necessary improvement, featuring even plumper pods and also powdery mildew resistance. But like its predecessor, 'Super Sugar Snap' also produces over a long season and grows on relatively tall vines (to 5ft or higher). The pods are also sweet and delicious, raw or cooked!
