We got this new sprouting broccoli from our friend Jennifer Williams of Wild Dreams Farm on Vashon Island in Washington state. She in turn got if from the good folks at Saltwater Seeds, a small seed company based in Chimacum and Sequim, Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. This diverse variety comes from a combination of several different types of spring-planted sprouting broccoli, all with locally-adapted parentage from the region. It produces many tender sweet side shoots rather than one large head. This type of broccoli is ready for harvest sooner than heading broccoli and produces over a longer period of time. Sweet and tasty enough to eat raw, but excellent as well in soups, stir-fries, pickles, etc.
NOTE: This is not broccoli raab, the bitter-flavored biennial broccoli cousin, but a type of true broccoli (or "broccolini", in this case).
GROWING TIPS: Direct-sow in early spring. Can be succession-sowed for extended harvest.
