Phaseolus vulgaris

Origin: Arikara People

Improvement status: Cultivar

Seeds per packet: ~35

Germination tested 01/2026: 93%

Life cycle: Annual

This is the abundantly productive, early, drought-tolerant bush bean of the Arikara people — much of whose land is now North Dakota, but who largely reside on the Ft. Berthold Reservation today, due to the ongoing legacy of American settler-colonialism. These beans can range in color from brown to tan to yellow (or even neon yellow) based on growing conditions, though they always have the same brown eye around the hilum. Excellent for soups and stews and baked beans.

This seed comes from our friend Hank Keogh of Avoca Seed Farm near Corvallis, Oregon

GROWING TIPS: Direct sow once soil begins to warm in the spring (when you might plant sweetcorn). This is a bush type bean, so it needs no trellis. Space plants 8-12 inches apart.
