Dakota Tears is an amazing open-pollinated onion bred over two decades by David Podoll of Prairie Road Organic Farm & Seed in Fullerton, North Dakota. Over the past two decades, since its release, it has become the gold standard organic onion from seed. Prairie Road reports that this onion actually performs best when direct-seeded, unlike most onions which require babying in a greenhouse. Due to the short growing season of North Dakota, this onion can go from seed to harvestable bulb in 112 days. Bulbs are roughly 12 ounces and 3 inches across. It was selected for vigor, size, pest resistance, and long-term storability — well-grown, well-stored onions can keep for an entire year, until the next year's crop is being harvested! Our seed was produced by Brennan Henry Allsworth of Whistlepig Farm in Boise, Idaho.
