Chestnut charcoal is useful, and has both historical and contemporary significance.

Support the nascent carbon-sequestering, agro-forestry movement focused on perennial staple food crops.

This charcoal is made from chestnut trees that were grown on what was previously commercial corn/soy ground, at Badgersett Research Farm in southern Minnesota.

These trees were sustainably coppiced, the process by which a tree or bush is cut to the ground, in order for it to produce fresh new growth from the roots. This is a healthy, regenerative process for the plant, and coppice cycles can play out over decades and even centuries.

The goal is to turn the wood from coppice into a salable product, and the production of Chestnut charcoal is one such endeavor.
