Blue Speckled Tepary Bean is one of the southernmost examples of a species of bean cultivated mainly in the drier regions of the southewestern US and Central America. A recent study found that the only beans capable of producing seeds under warm-night conditions (increasingly common on this warming planet) are tepary beans, so they will likely play a critical role in breeding beans for the future. Traditionally sown in floodplains, tepary beans grow quickly and produce a profusion of flowers and beans. Some are even said to grow to maturity with just a single watering. This Mayan heirloom from southern Mexico is one of the most beautiful examples of the species.
