Origin: Mayan people, Southern Mexico
Blue Speckled Tepary Bean is one of the southernmost examples of a species of bean cultivated mainly in the drier regions of the southewestern US and Central America. A recent study found that the only beans capable of producing seeds under warm-night conditions (increasingly common on this warming planet) are tepary beans, so they will likely play a critical role in breeding beans for the future. Traditionally sown in floodplains, tepary beans grow quickly and produce a profusion of flowers and beans. Some are even said to grow to maturity with just a single watering. This Mayan heirloom from southern Mexico is one of the most beautiful examples of the species. Our seeds were grown by Clint Freund and Kass McKinnon of Cultivating the Commons in Madison, Wisconsin, which will receive half of the proceeds of all sales.
