Another gem from Joseph Lofthouse, Landrace Seedsman, in high-altitude Paradise, Utah. Like all of Joseph's seeds, these are super resilient and contain a great diversity of genes.
'Rocky Mountain Wheat Grex' contains a mind-boggling array of diversity, rooted in Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance's Heritage Grain Trials project, which has been trialing a vast number of ancient and heritage wheats for productivity in the Rocky Mountains. Joseph took the best performing of these and interplanted them to allow them to promiscuously cross pollinate. This population doubtless includes many of the original varieties (as wheat is largely self-pollinating), along with new promiscuously pollinated hybrids (low humidity leads wheat to cross pollinate more than usual). This population also includes seed from the Occidental Arts and Ecology "revolutionary wheat breeding project". That project contains thousands of accessions of wheat which are also being allowed to promiscuously cross-pollinate. Both populations have been selected for human scale harvest (waist high plants, non-lodging, easy threshing, early season harvest). If you're interested in breeding wheat, give a packet of these seeds a try.
We're honored and grateful to be the near-exclusive source of Joseph's amazing seeds — freeing him up to do more farming, plant breeding, pickling, yoga, and loving. We know you will enjoy planting these extraordinary seeds. Thanks Joseph!
GROWING TIPS: Plant in late fall, or early spring. Spacing about 2"-6" in rows about 12" apart. Grows about 3 to 5 feet tall.
