This close relative of the Black-eyed Pea tolerates heat and drought better then regular pole beans (this is a climbing cowpea, unlike most of our sprawling types). They also feature extra-floral nectaries that make them very attractive to wasps and other beneficial insects. Cook as you would any dry bean, especially Black-eyed Peas. Leaves and young pods are also edible and delicious, and some of the best green sources of protein available. This old variety comes from Burkina Faso in West Africa, which is the region where cowpeas were likely domesticated and from which it spread around the world through the African diaspora. This variety was popularized by our friend and board member Owen Taylor of Truelove Seeds, and these seed were grown for us by Aaron Parker in Maine.
