This very rare bean is one of the first beans we attempted to grow when we started farming in New Jersey, and it proved to be one of the most productive and resilient of all we've ever grown. It produces so many seeds for a bush bean, in fact, that we had been growing it for years before we realized it was bred as a snap bean! Of course the name should have been a clue: it can start producing pods after just six weeks in the ground. A very old variety, it was written about as early as the 1860s, and is believed to date from at least the 1700s. Works great as a dried bean too. This is a hard-to-find bean — there seems to be just one other US seed source at the moment — and we have a relatively limited supply, so get 'em while they're hot!
GROWING TIPS: Direct seed an inch deep in rows a foot apart. Plants could be about 6 inches apart.
