Also known as American Cranberry, this species should not be confused with the low-growing, commonly cultivated fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon), though this is also an edible species. Highbush Cranberries can work as a substitute in cooking, jams and jellies, though they are particularly acidic and high in vitamin C. It's best to harvest them, like other edible Viburnums, after a frost or two once their sugars reach their sweetest. Traditionally it's been used as a medicine after birth. It's a large shrub with typical Viburnum umbels, providing a lot of wildlife and insectary value.
